About IowaLUG

Explore what Iowa LEGO® User Group is about

The Iowa LEGO® Users Group (IowaLUG) is a community of adults and families who enjoy building with LEGO® brand building blocks. IowaLUG is based in Des Moines, Iowa and serves to support LEGO® hobby groups throughout the state.

IowaLUG was founded in the fall of 2012 by adult fans of LEGO (AFOL) Chris Hettinger and Scott Bowman. The pair's debut project was a public build event at which they assembled a 75,000 piece scale architectural model of the Science Center of Iowa & BLANK IMAX Dome Theater.

IowaLUG hosts "Meet Ups" monthly to dicuss up-coming events, share MOCs (My Own Creations), new LEGO® products, ideas, and really anything LEGO related or not. We provide a table with loose parts for everyone to spend some time building. Members typically bring MOCs or sets to display and share. Our Meet Ups are held at the Science Center of Iowa & BLANK IMAX Theater in downtown Des Moines on the third Sunday of each month from 2 PM to 4 PM.* Our Meet Up are free to attend, and we invite anyone to come in and join us.**

  • * The schedule is subject to change, refer to our list of up-coming events on the homepage or contact us by email.
  • ** Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

What does a LUG do?

  • We aim to build friendships by fostering a community amoungst adult fans of LEGO® and their families.
  • We want to support the growth of the hobby by working together within our group, our communities and neighborhoods, and with others to create awareness of the adult LEGO® fan community locally and globally.
  • We share our creations and techniques through public exhibitions and other activities to encourage the creativity and imagination we all share. These events provide our members with opportunities to showcase their interests, talents, and to engage the public in conversation about the LEGO® hobby community.
